A Phenomenological Trilogy

The three projects collectively delve into different facets of phenomenology, each exploring a unique aspect of human experience. Phenomenology of Repetition examines the peculiar effects of repetitive actions on perception and memory, using the repetitive writing of a Chinese character to critique rigid educational practices. Phenomenology of Touch invites viewers to engage with the sensory interplay between active and passive roles in the simple act of touching one's own hand. Lastly, Phenomenology of Fatigue reflects on the physical and emotional distance we may feel from our own body through the act of prolonged writing with a plaster replica of the artist's hand.

Phenomenology of Repetition

This performance piece explores the phenomenology of repetition and semantic satiation - how a word sounds and looks weird when repeated. Central to this piece is a Chinese character 解:(solution:), emblematic of the beginning of a solution in mathematical problems. It is a symbol deeply ingrained in the artist’s childhood experience - the artist was punished by being forced to write it 300 times for omitting it in a test. Through this repetitive and durational act, the piece not only captures the strangeness that emerges from repetition, but also questions the efficiency and humanity of the rigid and repetitive educational practices that prioritize rote learning over genuine understanding and creativity.

Touching Hands

dimension: dimensions variable
medium: plaster, artist's hands, video and audio recording
Phenomenology of Touch

Touching Hands invites the viewers to take part into an activity that provokes double sensation - when one hand touches the other. This performance piece captures a profound exploration of touch, where the hand that touches acts as the organ of perception, while the hand being touched transforms into an object of perception. This work embodies the phenomenological inquiry into how one cannot simultaneously experience their body as both active subject and passive object. Through the simple yet profound act of one hand touching the other, the piece invites viewers to contemplate the often ignored bodily experience and the complex interplay of sensation and perception.

I Use My Own Hand to Write

year: 2024
dimension: dimensions variable
medium: a piece of paper, pen, plaster, artist's hands, video and audio recording
Phenomenology of Fatigue

“I Use My Own Hand to Write" is a performance piece that utilizes a plaster replica of the artist’s right hand holding a pen to write the title of the work. This piece articulates the estrangement one might feel from their own limb when it is used as a tool for writing. This artwork not only captures the physical exhaustion from prolonged writing but also reflects on the moments when our own body parts feel alien to us.
